Heat a large, heavy bottomed pot over medium heat and add the ground beef, onions and garlic along with 1 teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring often to break up the ground beef until lightly browned and the onions are starting to soften.
Transfer the beef mixture to a large roaster and add the tomato paste, maple syrup, vinegar, mustard, remaining 1 teaspoon of salt and spices.
Once combined, stir in the beans along with the water.
Bake for 1 and ½ to 2 hours until thickened, stirring every 45 minutes and adding water as needed and salt to taste.
