Are you team fries or sweet potato fries?
If given the choice, I'll always go for the latter (though it is hard to turn down good crispy fries!).
But, often, the deep-fried version tends not to leave my stomach feeling so great afterwards.
Which is why I loved making them at home in the oven. But then we got an air fryer and it took them to whole new level! They are:
- Quick and Easy. With minimal prep and ready in nearly half the time required to make them in the oven (plus even more hands off thanks to not needing to flip them), they are easy to whip up as a last minute side dish.
- Versatile Side. Pair them with burgers, baked salmon, a salad and more. Or enjoy them as a stand alone snack. I have yet to find a time when these sweet potato wedges aren't a good idea.
- Simple Ingredients. This recipe just uses three basic and wholesome ingredients. But don't be fooled by the short ingredient list- they are delicious!
- Customizable. While I kept the base recipe simple, you can easily customize them into different flavors like BBQ, Cajun and garlic parmesan. See the "make it your own" section below for exactly how.
The Ingredients
- Sweet Potatoes- You can make these with white or orange fleshed sweet potatoes (which some grocery stores may have labeled at yams). You can also use regular potatoes if you're looking for a recipe to make air fryer wedge fries.
- Sea Salt- Table or kosher salt will also work; adjust to taste.
- Avocado Oil- I love to use avocado oil for its mild taste and high smoke point. Your cooking oil of choice can be substituted.
The Method
1. Prep the Sweet Potatoes. Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes (you can peel them too but don't have too).
Then cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise. Finally, cut each half into even wedges (depending on the size, I usually get 12-16 wedges per potato- you want them about ½ inch thick at their thickest part).
2. Season. Toss the wedges with avocado oil and salt until evenly coated.
3. Air Fry. Place the sweet potato wedges into the basket of your air fryer. They can overlap but you don't want them to be too over crowded (I recommend no more than 2 layers deep).
Air fry at 370 F for 16-22 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 or so minutes.
They will be tender with slightly brown crisp edges when they are done.
4. Enjoy!
Leftovers and Storage
To Store: Place leftover sweet potato wedges in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can freeze them but the texture changes slightly with thawing.
To Reheat: For best results, rewarm in the air fryer at 350 F for 4-6 minutes. You can also reheat them in the oven at 350 F for 8-10 minutes or in the microwave (though they will be a bit soggy this way).
Make it Your Own
- BBQ Seasoned- Replace the salt with 2 teaspoons of Barbecue Seasoning or add ¾ teaspoon paprika and ¼ teaspoon each black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and chili powder.
- Garlic Parmesan- Add ½ teaspoon of garlic powder along with the salt and then toss the wedges with ¼ cup of finely shredded parmesan cheese once cooked.
- Cajun- For a bit of a spicy flavor, season with 1 and ½ teaspoons of Cajun Seasoning. Omit (or reduce) the salt if your seasoning has salt added.
Serving Ideas
- With Handhelds: Sweet potato wedges make the perfect side to burgers and sandwich favorites such as a BLT or grilled cheese.
- As a Dipper: Enjoy these wedges dipped in Ranch dip (or Buffalo Ranch), your favorite aioli, creamy sriracha dip (see the recipe in these sweet potato fritters) and more!
- Side Dish: These are also a great side to meals such as baked Cajun salmon, chicken skewers, roast pork tenderloin and pulled pork.
- With Breakfast: Serve them as an alternative to classic breakfast potatoes alongside some bacon and eggs or avocado toast.
If you don't have an air fryer, you can definitely make these in the oven! Follow the steps up to adding to the basket of an air fryer. But instead, place them in a single layer on a lined baking sheet.
Bake in a 425°F preheated oven for 15 minutes. Then remove from the oven and flip each wedge over. Return to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes until tender.
Tips for the Best Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
- Enjoy Hot. These sweet potato wedges are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer when they are crispiest.
- Cut Even Shapes. Ensure you cut into even-sized wedges for even cooking.
- Don’t Overfill the Air Fryer. While it is okay if they aren't in a single layer, for most even cooking, I recommend not having more than 2 layers of depth.
