Spoon scooping a serving of apple crisp out of a baking dish.

The next time you want your house to smell AH-mazing, you can skip the need for any scented candles!

Instead, fill your kitchen with the warm aroma of cinnamon and apples that awaits you when you whip up this oat flour apple crisp recipe (or when you make a batch of Applesauce Oat Flour Muffins).

Trust me, nothing smells better than the cozy flavors of fall that come together in this delightful dessert (though a fresh batch of Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies might come in as a close second!).

Tender apple slices are kissed with just the right amount of cinnamon and maple syrup and pair perfectly with the delicious oat flour crumble topping (the same one found on this Cranberry Crisp).

Whether you're a die-hard apple dessert lover or simply enjoy a comforting treat, you'll want to give this recipe a try!

The Ingredients

Oat flour apple crisp ingredients.
  • Apples- Choose any variety or a combination of varieties for your apple crisp but depending on their natural sweetness, you may need to adjust the amount of maple syrup used. Approximately 4 large apples, yielding around 6 cups when sliced, are needed. I like to slice them about ¼ inch thick to maintain a nice texture, but feel free to vary the sizes according to your preference. Peeling the apples is optional.
  • Maple Syrup- While honey or brown sugar can be used as alternatives for the filling, maple syrup adds a delightful flavor that pairs exceptionally well with apples. For more alternatives, see this post on maple syrup substitutes.
  • Lemon Juice- Adding a touch of freshness, lemon juice also helps prevent the apples from browning if you prepare the crisp ahead of time. However, it can be omitted if desired.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter- Both unsalted and salted butter work well in this recipe.
  • Brown Sugar- Brown sugar provides sweetness and depth of flavor to the topping. If you prefer a less refined sugar, coconut sugar can be used.
  • Large Flake Oats- For the crisp topping, large flake oats offer a wonderful texture. If you only have quick oats on hand, they can be used as a substitute, although the resulting texture may differ slightly. Nevertheless, the crumble topping will still be delicious! Use certified GF oats if you need the recipe to be gluten free.
  • Oat Flour- To make your own oat flour, simply pulse ¾ cup of large flake or quick oats in a blender until they reach a flour-like consistency. Alternatively, almond flour, whole wheat flour, or all-purpose flour can be used as substitutes for oat flour. Use certified GF oat flour if you need the recipe to be gluten free.
  • Sea Salt

The Method

1. Mix filling. Combine the apples, maple syrup, lemon juice, vanilla and cinnamon. This can be done right in the baking pan to save a dish.

Apples mixed with cinnamon, vanilla and lemon juice.

2. Prep topping. Melt the butter in a medium bowl. Add the remaining topping ingredients and mix until well combined. The mixture will be crumbly.

3. Top. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the filling.

4. Bake. Bake at 350 F for 45 minutes until the apples are tender and the crumble topping is golden.

5. Cool. Allow to cool for 5 minutes to allow the filling to settle and serve!

Leftovers and Storage

Make Ahead: You can fully assemble your apple crumble in a prepared baking dish, cover with a lid or plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For more tips and how to prepare it unassembled, see this post about apple crisp storage.

To Store: Allow crisp to cool completely and then cover with a lid or plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To Freeze: Cooked and cooled oat flour apple crisp can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

To Reheat: Apple crisp can be rewarmed in the microwave, in the oven at 350 F for 20-30 minutes or in a toaster oven. See this post about reheating apple crisp for full directions.

Make It Your Own

Make it Dairy Free and Vegan- Substitute coconut oil for the butter in the recipe.

Add Nuts- Add a generous handful of raw chopped nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, or pecans, to the oat topping for added crunch and flavor.

Experiment With Spices- In addition to the cinnamon, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or ginger to add depth to your dessert.

Make it a Fruit Medley Crisp- Try replacing half of the apples with another fruit such as:

  • Pears
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries (or make some Strawberry Oatmeal Crisp)

Small Batch- Halve the recipe and bake it in a loaf pan. Bake time may be reduced slightly.

Large Batch- Double the recipe and bake it in a 9x13 inch pan. Bake time may be increased slightly.

Serving Ideas

Apple crisp can be served warm or chilled, depending on your preference. I'm personally a fan of enjoying it straight out of the oven- so cozy and comforting!

This dessert can be enjoyed all on its own or:

  • With a scoop of vanilla ice cream (classic and delicious!)
  • Topped with dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence
  • Drizzled with salted caramel sauce

And try serving it alongside a hot cup of coffee, tea or apple cider.
