It's hard to beat a good sandwich. With a little effort and quality ingredients, I could easily eat a sandwich every day and have no complaints.
Especially a sandwich as good as this turkey BLT! You might find yourself eating it on repeat too, because:
- Higher Protein. The addition of turkey to a BLT makes it more hearty and filling as it brings the protein up to 30 grams per sandwich.
- Delicious. Taking all I know about making a delicious classic BLT, this sandwich is the perfect combination of chewy sourdough, crispy bacon, lettuce and juicy tomatoes. Plus, the addition of red wine vinegar and greek yogurt ranch in place of mayo makes it the best!
- Quick and Easy. Ready in minutes, it makes for a satisfying meal on busy days.
The Ingredients
- Sourdough- Sliced chewy sourdough is the perfect vessel for a sandwich. If you'd like, you can use another type of bread such as sprouted grain bread.
- Bacon- I recommend thin-cut bacon in a BLT as I find thick can be hard to bite all of the way through and you can end up pulling out a whole piece with one bite.
- Tomato- I like to use beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes.
- Lettuce- I love the flavor of leaf lettuce but you can use romaine, butter or iceberg instead.
- Greek Yogurt Ranch- I prefer to use ranch (particularly my Greek yogurt ranch) over mayo for a turkey BLT. It adds creaminess and extra flavor.
- Red Wine Vinegar- Dressing the tomatoes with a drizzle of this brings out their flavor and ensures the sandwich is extra juicy. It's optional but highly recommended.
- Turkey- You can use leftover turkey breast that has been sliced or use deli slices.
The Method
1. Cook the bacon. Add the bacon to a large skillet over medium low heat, cover and cook for 10-15 minutes until crispy. Remove to a plate lined with paper towels.
2. Toast the bread. Very lightly toast the bread and spread half of the ranch on the inside of each slice.
3. Assemble. Top the inside of one slice with the lettuce followed by the tomato. Drizzle the red wine vinegar over the tomato.
Place the bacon on top of the tomato followed by the sliced turkey and finally the second slice of bread.
4. Serve.
Leftovers and Storage
This turkey BLT is best eaten immediately after making so I recommend enjoying it fresh.
To Store: Allow the sandwich to cool on a wire rack for 15-20 minutes so that it doesn't get soggy and then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and enjoy cold.
Make it Your Own
- Chicken BLT- You can use sliced chicken in place of the turkey.
- Include Cheese- Add extra flavor with some cheddar, gouda or goat cheese.
- Avocado- Include ¼ of an avocado sliced for extra creaminess.
- Add Veggies- In addition the lettuce and tomato, try including:
- Roasted Red Peppers
- Caramelized Onions
- Sautéed Spinach
- Swap the Spread- A good spread makes a sandwich which is why I love this with ranch. For a slightly different flavor, you could try it with:
- Chimichurri
- Pesto (or make a turkey pesto sandwich)
- Mayo (classic for a BLT)
Serving Ideas
If you're wondering what to serve with your turkey BLT, any side that you like with sandwiches is perfect!
- Potatoes: Fries + a sandwich = yum.
- Soup: Such as a simple bowl of cherry tomato or potato soup.
- Salad: Try this with a Caesar or Pasta Salad.
- And More: Pickles, fresh veggies or see this list of Perfect Sides to Serve with BLTs.
Tips for the Best BLT Sandwich
- Toast Bread Lighty. Very lightly toast the bread to enhance its texture and prevent it from becoming soggy when assembling the sandwich but don't over toast it or it might hurt the top of your mouth when you bite into the sandwich.
- Drizzle Red Wine Vinegar on your Tomatoes. I read this simple trick a few years ago (I can't remember where!) and started incorporating it on all of my BLTs. It brightens up the flavor of the tomatoes and makes the sandwich nice and juicy.
- Use Ranch. While mayo is typical in a BLT, I find that using ranch instead takes this sandwich up a level.
