Have you tried sweet hummus yet?
If you haven't, I get it. It took me a little while to wrap my head (err... tastebuds?) around the idea of a chocolate dip where the main ingredient is chickpeas (brownie batter made from almond butter and maple syrup though- that makes sense!).
And if you enjoy savory hummus flavors, you may just be content with that. (And if you find yourself wondering what do dip in that, I have a list of what to serve with classic hummus as well).
I thought I was. But then I started playing around with my dark chocolate hummus recipe, and I decided there was room in my life for both regular hummus and and the sweet dip version.
Especially when there are so many delicious ways to enjoy this perfect dessert dip.
I hope this list gives you plenty of inspiration!
Dessert Hummus Garnishes
Whenever I'm serving my go to healthy chocolate hummus recipe to guests, I always like to add some garnishes to make it look special (and distract them from the fact that I am serving a chocolate dessert made of chickpeas...).
You can also mix these right into the hummus for some extra texture. These toppings and mix-ins would be a great addition to jazz up your dip:
- Chocolate chips or cacao nibs
- A swirl of almond butter or peanut butter
- Crushed candy cane (especially if you add mint extract to make mint chocolate hummus)
- Chopped, toasted nuts or seeds
- Whipped cream
What to Dip in Chocolate and Dessert Hummus
There are so many great options for what to dunk in this delicious dip- both sweet and savory!
Fresh Fruit
Your favorite fruit is arguably the best way to enjoy your dessert hummus. While fresh strawberries are a natural choice to pair with the chocolate hummus taste (like an easy chocolate covered strawberry), almost any fruit is delicious paired with dessert chickpea dip. All of these ideas would be a great choice:
- Fresh Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Apple Slices
- Grapes
- Banana Slices
- Pineapple
- Sliced Pears
- Orange Slices
- Kiwi
Dried Fruit
- Apple Chips
- Banana Chips
- Dried Apricot
Cookies and Crackers
For the ultimate dessert board, serve your hummus with a variety of sweet baked goods.
- Sugar Cookies
- Shortbread
- Gingersnaps (Especially with a pumpkin pie or snickerdoodle hummus)
- Graham Crackers
- Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chips and Crackers
If you love salty and sweet, try serving your chocolate dessert hummus with some salty chips, crackers or pretzels. For ease of dipping, choose chips that are on the sturdy side.
- Pita Chips
- Or Cinnamon Pita Chips
- Potato Chips
- Crackers
- Pretzels
Other Ideas
Broken Waffles Cones- Using them as a dipper is a great way to use them up.
Marshmallows- Pair this with chocolate hummus and graham crackers for a s'mores inspired treat.
Rice Cakes- I especially like caramel rice cakes with chocolate hummus.
Celery- You might be thinking "veggies with chocolate hummus" but stay with me! If you've ever had "Ants on a Log" with peanut butter and chocolate chips, you know that celery tastes good with a bit of sweet. And so I thought, why not try it with chocolate hummus and it ended up being one of my favorite dippers!
What to Serve with Dessert Hummus
Besides what to dip in your brownie batter hummus, you might be wondering what other sides and snacks you could serve to round out your platter. Here are some ideas that would complement your tray of dessert hummus and dippers:
- Bowl of Roasted Nuts (such as honey roasted cashews)
- Platter of Baked Goods (such as muffins and cookies)
- Veggie Tray with Santa Fe Ranch Greek Yogurt dip (or traditional hummus)
- A Cheese Board
Recipes that Use Chocolate or Dessert Hummus
Quesadillas- This recipes uses chocolate hummus and fruit for a sweet spin on classic quesadillas. They would be great made on some oat tortillas.
Muffins- If you have leftover chocolate hummus, making these banana muffins is a great option.
Trifle- And if you want to get fancy, try using your chocolate hummus as a healthier alternative to pudding in this trifle recipe.
More Ways to Use Dessert and Chocolate Hummus
On Toast- If you love sweet spreads like "Nutella" or cinnamon butter, try spreading your toast with dessert hummus for a delicious and filling piece of toast.
Toast with chocolate hummus, sliced bananas and a sprinkle of chocolate granola for some crunch is one of my favorite snacks- yum!
Add to a Sandwich- Likewise, try using your sweet hummus on a sandwich.
As a Pancake Topping- Dessert hummus is also great on pancakes, waffles and French toast.
Or Even an Ice Cream Topping
As a Frosting- Use your hummus to frost cakes, brownies or cookies (I like to use it as the filling in these homemade "Oreos").
